What makes a successful knee replacement? Is it successful implantation of the device in an acceptable alignment, or are there other factors?

I believe that successful implantation of the device is perhaps less than a half of the overall outcome of a successful total knee replacement. Obviously, the components need to be placed in the desired position and in the correct alignment, so that when one is done the patient’s leg is in acceptable anatomic alignment. There is some variability here that probably, if it is just simply a matter of two or three degrees, is not critical. However, larger deviations from this type of alignment leaves the patient and surgeon very unhappy.
